Moon Milk -- Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions?

Everything you need to know about Moon Milk, nighttime protein, and how to make it part of your ritual.

Product & Function
What is Moon Milk?

Moon Milk is a nighttime protein supplement designed to support overnight muscle recovery, relaxation, and sleep quality. It uses slow-digesting micellar casein as its protein base and includes a full sleep stack to make the most of the hours you spend asleep.

Why take protein before bed?

Your body does its most critical repair work during sleep -- but for most people, there's zero protein in their system for 7-9 hours overnight. Research shows that consuming protein before bed increases overnight muscle protein synthesis, meaning your body can actively rebuild while you rest. Casein protein is ideal for this because it digests slowly, delivering amino acids throughout the night rather than all at once.

What makes Moon Milk different from regular protein?

Most protein powders are designed for the 30-minute post-workout window. They use fast-digesting whey and often include stimulants or ingredients that have no business being in a nighttime product. Moon Milk is formulated specifically for nighttime -- slow-digesting casein, a full sleep stack, no sugar, no caffeine, and ritual-grade flavors designed to become part of your wind-down.

What type of protein is used?

We use high-quality micellar casein -- the slowest-digesting protein available. Unlike whey, which clears your system in roughly 2 hours, micellar casein forms a gel in the stomach and releases amino acids gradually over 6-8 hours. That sustained delivery is exactly what your body needs during an overnight fast.

Ingredients & Formulation
Does Moon Milk help with sleep?

Moon Milk is formulated with ingredients traditionally used to support relaxation and nighttime routines -- including L-Theanine (200mg), Apigenin (50mg, the active flavonoid in chamomile), Magnesium Glycinate, and Glycine. These work together to support calm and sleep quality without sedation or grogginess the next morning.*

What is apigenin and why is it included?

Apigenin is a flavonoid found in chamomile that binds to GABA receptors in the brain, promoting calm and supporting sleep quality. It's been popularized in the longevity and biohacking community as a cleaner, non-habit-forming alternative to melatonin. We include 50mg per serving.*

Why casein instead of whey at night?

Whey is fast-digesting -- great post-workout, wrong for overnight. It spikes amino acids quickly then clears, leaving your body with nothing for the remaining 6-7 hours. Casein digests slowly and steadily, which matches the long overnight window. Multiple studies confirm that pre-sleep casein increases overnight muscle protein synthesis compared to going to bed without protein.

Is it sugar-free?

Yes -- Moon Milk contains no added sugar. It's sweetened with Reb-M stevia, a clean, highly-purified form of stevia with minimal aftertaste. Spiking your blood sugar before bed works against sleep quality, so this was a non-negotiable for us.

Does it contain caffeine?

No. Moon Milk is completely caffeine-free. The cacao in Mexican Hot Cacao contains only trace amounts of theobromine (not caffeine), and at the amounts used it has no stimulant effect.

What flavors are available?

Three SKUs at launch: Spiced Moon (a warm chai blend of cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and clove), Mexican Hot Cacao (natural and Dutch-process cacao with cinnamon and cayenne), and Golden Moon (turmeric, ginger, black pepper, and vanilla). All three use the same 20g casein base and full sleep stack.

Is it dairy-free?

No -- micellar casein is milk-derived. Moon Milk is not suitable for those with dairy allergies or strict vegan diets. We do include coconut milk powder to improve texture and creaminess.

Will this break a fast?

Yes -- Moon Milk contains protein and calories and will break a strict fast. If you practice time-restricted eating, your window would need to include the time you take Moon Milk. Some people shift their eating window earlier specifically to accommodate a pre-sleep protein dose.

Usage
When should I take Moon Milk?

30-60 minutes before bed as part of your nighttime routine. The L-Theanine and Apigenin begin working relatively quickly, while the casein starts its slow overnight release. Making it part of a consistent wind-down ritual -- dimming lights, putting your phone down, sipping slowly -- amplifies the effect.

Can I take it every night?

Yes -- it's designed for daily use. Consistency is the point. The benefits of pre-sleep protein compound over time, and making it a ritual rather than an occasional supplement is how you get the most out of it.

How do I prepare it?

Mix two scoops with 8-10oz of hot or warm water, dairy milk, or a milk alternative. Stir well or use a frother for a creamier texture. We recommend warm -- it's a nighttime ritual, not a pre-workout chug. The casein mixes best with warm liquid.

Performance & Lifestyle
Will this help with muscle growth?

Protein supports muscle recovery and maintenance when combined with resistance training. Pre-sleep casein has been shown in research to increase overnight muscle protein synthesis. If you're training consistently and hitting your total daily protein targets, Moon Milk helps ensure you're not leaving the overnight recovery window empty.*

Can I use this while dieting or cutting?

Yes -- and it's particularly useful during a cut. When you're eating less, hitting protein targets gets harder and muscle loss becomes a real risk. Moon Milk lets you add 20g of clean protein with no added sugar right before bed, protecting muscle while you're in a deficit.

Can I use this while on GLP-1 medications?

Many people on GLP-1 medications find Moon Milk useful precisely because appetite suppression can make hitting daily protein targets difficult. A single scoop before bed is an easy way to protect muscle without forcing a large meal. As always, consult your healthcare provider about your specific situation.*

Is this safe to stack with other supplements?

Moon Milk can generally be used alongside most supplement routines. If you're already taking magnesium or other sleep-support supplements, be mindful of total doses. As always, consult your healthcare provider if you're on any medications or have specific health concerns.
