Why Micellar Casein Is the Best Protein for Overnight Recovery (And Why Timing Matters)

March 25, 2026 · Jordan Selden

Most people pick their protein based on how fast it digests. For overnight recovery, that's the wrong axis.

The right question is: how long does it stay elevated?

That's the entire reason micellar casein exists in the nighttime protein conversation — and the reason it's the protein inside Moon Milk instead of whey, plant blend, or collagen.

What makes casein different

Casein is one of the two proteins naturally found in milk. Whey is the other. They're separated during cheesemaking, and they behave like opposite ingredients despite coming from the same source.

Whey is fast. It hits peak amino acid levels in your blood about 60 to 90 minutes after you drink it, then drops back to baseline within 2 to 3 hours. Great post-workout. Almost useless for an 8-hour sleep window.

Casein is slow. In the acidic environment of your stomach, micellar casein forms a soft gel that takes 6 to 8 hours to break down. Amino acids release in a steady drip, not a spike. Muscle protein synthesis stays active across the entire sleep cycle instead of crashing in the first 90 minutes.

That's the whole pitch for nighttime casein. Same protein source, different release profile, different job.

The study that put casein on the map

Trommelen & van Loon (2016) is the paper that anchors most of the modern nighttime-protein research. Subjects consumed 40 g of casein 30 minutes before bed. Results:

  • Amino acids remained elevated throughout the entire night
  • Overnight muscle protein synthesis rates increased by 22%
  • Whole-body protein balance was positive across the sleep window
  • No disruption to sleep quality or next-day appetite

Snijders et al. (2015) extended that into a 12-week training study. Subjects who added 27.5 g of pre-sleep casein to their training routine gained more muscle mass and strength than the control group eating the same total daily protein without the bedtime dose. Same protein, same total — but timing the dose to the recovery window mattered.

Why micellar specifically

Not all casein is equal. The form on your supplement shelf falls into two camps:

  • Micellar casein — the intact, native protein structure. Forms a gel in the stomach. Slow, sustained release. The form used in the studies above.
  • Casein hydrolysate / caseinate — pre-broken-down casein. Fast-digesting, more like whey. Cheaper. Often what's hiding in "casein blends."

Moon Milk uses micellar casein at 20 g per serving, sourced and tested for the intact micelle structure. That's the form that produces the 6-to-8-hour release window. Anything else and you're paying for casein but getting whey kinetics.

Why not whey before bed?

Whey before bed isn't bad — it's just incomplete. You'll get a fast amino acid spike, your body will use what it can in the first 90 minutes of sleep, and then synthesis drops back to fasted-state baseline for the next 6 hours. You're feeding the first chapter of the recovery window and sleeping through the rest of it.

For a deeper breakdown of how the two profiles compare in the overnight setting, the casein vs whey at night piece walks through the kinetics side-by-side.

Why we paired it with the sleep stack

Casein gives your body the raw material to rebuild. The four-ingredient sleep stack — glycine, magnesium bisglycinate, L-theanine, apigenin — creates the conditions to do it.

Sleep architecture and muscle protein synthesis happen in parallel during the same overnight window. Supporting one without the other leaves half the window unused. That's the entire reason Moon Milk is one bag instead of five bottles.

The bottom line

If you want a protein for after a workout, pick whey. If you want a protein that keeps amino acids elevated through the actual recovery window — the 6 to 8 hours where most rebuild happens — micellar casein is the only protein with the kinetics to do it.

That's not marketing. That's the digestion curve.
